AMNT 429-Advanced Tech Design for Aircraft production

Case Studies:

Case Study 1:

Scenario: You work for an aircraft manufacturing company that is in the process of developing a new aircraft. A great amount of research and investment goes into the development of making this aircraft and, as with any investment, a problem during the development and or construction of the aircraft could financially damage your company.

In this case analysis activity, do the following:

  • Research a problem that a manufacturing company experienced with an aircraft during the development and construction phase. Examples can be gathered from commercial, business, general aviation (GA), and military aircraft design. Think about some of the issues you have read about such as the battery problem on the 787 Dreamliner or the bulkhead design of the F-35. Both of these issues were costly to the manufacturers.
  • In your example, describe what the manufacturer did to correct the discrepancies and what you would have done differently if you were designing the aircraft.

Adhere to the Case Analysis Guidelines and review the evaluation rubric. Submit your document with a cover sheet. Include your name, the name of aircraft or organization, course title, course number, semester and year, instructor’s name, and date of submission on the cover sheet.

Save your assignment using a naming convention that includes your first and last name and the activity number (or description). Do not add punctuation or special characters.

Your paper will automatically be evaluated through Turnitin when you submit your assignment in this activity. Turnitin is a service that checks your work for improper citation or potential plagiarism by comparing it against a database of web pages, student papers, and articles from academic books and publications. Ensure that your work is entirely your own and that you have not plagiarized any material! In preparation for the related Case Analysis 1 Peer Review activity, go to the corresponding Case Analysis Peer Review Discussion and post your Case Analysis 1 document file as an attachment to an original, primary posting. Comments are not required, but please include the title of your Case Analysis in the Discussion Message area. This is required to facilitate the peer review process. After posting your original Case Analysis file, any peers’ posts will become available for you to view.

Case Study 2:

You have been chosen to be on a team that will be selecting materials for use in an aircraft structure. Before selecting any type of material, you want to ensure that it meets the required specifications.

In this technical case analysis activity, do the following:

  • Research a material that was incorporated into the design of an aircraft structure that did not meet expectations. Clearly describe the material and application, how the structure failed to meet the requirements, and under what conditions that material proved to be inadequate.
  • How would you recommend correcting the above structural material failure?
  • Would you reinforce or redesign the problem area, or choose a different type of material? Please be specific in your analysis.

Adhere to the Case Analysis Guidelines and review the evaluation rubric below.

Case Analysis 3:

Composites are widely used in modern aircraft of today. Composite technology has changed the way we design and build new aircraft that are much stronger and lighter than their predecessors. However, with any new product comes new challenges.

In this technical case analysis activity, do the following:

  • Research a problem in any aircraft application that was encountered due to the use of composite materials and describe how the problem was solved.
  • Was the problem solved by a new inspection? Or perhaps the structure needed to be reinforced or redesigned? How would you have solved this problem? Please be specific in your analysis.

Case Analysis 4:

In this technical case analysis activity, do the following:

  • Research an aviation environmental issue (air emissions, noise, waste, etc.) and clearly articulate the impact the problem has on the environment.
  • How you would resolve the problem using the latest technology? Please be specific in your analysis.
